Sinicuichi was traditionally used by the Aztecs in their rituals of divination. They believed it had supernatural qualities and that it helped recall past events as if they had taken place yesterday. The leaves were commonly soaked in water and allowed to ferment in the sun for 1-2days. This, along with the belief that consuming this liquid gives vision a yellow tinge, is why Sinicuichi is commonly known as the 'Sun-Opener'.
